Hollin Bank Farm
Our Organic Farm
Hollin Bank Farm is an upland, organic, environmentally-focused farm at the head of Coniston Water in the Lake District. We’re home to low densities of mixed livestock including chickens, geese, ducks, longhorn cows, sheep, bees and Tamworth pigs. Each has a part to play in the sustainability of the farm.
What’s On
We are passionate about participation with working landscapes and engaging more deeply with the natural world. Rooted in responsible farming methods and sustainable ecological practices, we have been offering different opportunities to get involved over the last year including open days, land skills workshops and longer term volunteering.
See our courses and events page which will direct you to eventbrite where you can find more information of our future opportunities. You can book through eventbrite or direct with us, please be aware eventbrite charges a booking fee. For any questions or to book, get in touch via our email. We are working on providing a booking form through our website.
Rejuvenating the woodland
Nature is at the centre of our farming practice, and in the centre of our land we fittingly have a beautiful broadleaf woodland. Part ancient woodland and part old coppice, we are reinstating diversity and resilience to 30 acres of oak, hazel, and beech woods. With grazing removed 5 years ago, we are starting to see saplings emerge. We are monitoring changes each year and have planted native understory species in a few fenced plots. Over time, we hope these pockets of regeneration will radiate throughout the woodland.
But is it not only ecological diversity we want to restore. Woodlands used to be at the heart of community, with a network of skilled artisan trades operating in and around woodlands. For several hundred years the Coniston area was a centre for coppicing and charcoal burning providing materials for many local crafts. We want to bring people back into the woodland, and thus the woodland as a sustainable productive element of the farm, both ecologically and economically.
You can contribute to making it a thriving, productive place once again, by joining our open days or attending a course.
