Hollin Bank Farm

Our Organic Farm

Hollin Bank Farm is an upland, organic, environmentally-focused farm at the head of Coniston Water in the Lake District. We’re home to low densities of mixed livestock including chickens, geese, ducks, longhorn cows, sheep, bees and Tamworth pigs. Each has a part to play in the sustainability of the farm.

Rejuvenating the woodland

Nature is at the centre of our farming practice, and in the centre of our land we fittingly have a beautiful broadleaf woodland. Part ancient woodland and part old coppice, we are reinstating diversity and resilience to 30 acres of oak, hazel, and beech woods. With grazing removed 5 years ago, we are starting to see saplings emerge. We are monitoring changes each year and have planted native understory species in a few fenced plots. Over time, we hope these pockets of regeneration will radiate throughout the woodland.

But is it not only ecological diversity we want to restore. Woodlands used to be at the heart of community, with a network of skilled artisan trades operating in and around woodlands. For several hundred years the Coniston area was a centre for coppicing and charcoal burning providing materials for many local crafts. We want to bring people back into the woodland, and thus the woodland as a sustainable productive element of the farm, both ecologically and economically.

You can contribute to making it a thriving, productive place once again, by joining our open days or attending a course.
